About Dr. Sherrill Berryman Johnson

Dr. Sherrill Berryman Johnson, known fondly as "Dr. J," founded and led the first B.F.A. dance program at a historically Black college or university, at Howard University in Washington, DC.

For many years she taught, choreographed, advocated, and led a movement in dance, both in the Washington region and across the country. A woman of verve, grace, and intellect, she believed dance holds many traditions and many histories, and she worked to bring all of those voices into fuller view. The dance world is richer for her contributions, and this fund carries her work forward by investing in young artists.
