2021 Ballet Audition Requirements

 

Beginning February 16, 2021, registration for the Ballet Audition for Women of Color and Men of Color will open through the IABD Acceptd online portal.

 

Live Zoom audition slots will be available on a first come, first serve basis.


AUDITION INFORMATION

 

Date:                Saturday, March 27, 2021 (Women)

                         Sunday, March 28, 2021 (Men)

 

Time:                1:00pm – 6:00pm ET

 

Fee:                  $20.00

 

Age:                 15 years of age and older

                            ** Five (5) years or more Ballet Training/Experience

 

Location:         Zoom Virtual Audition

 


APPLICATION TIMELINE (subject to change):

February 16, 2021:      Online application portal officially opens

 

March 1, 2021:             Live Zoom Audition scheduling begins

 

March 14, 2021:           Live Zoom Audition scheduling closes

 

April 15, 2021:              Auditionees notified of audition results via email



APPLICATION FEE:

There is a $20 application fee, payable online via major credit card at the time you fully complete and submit your application. To apply for a fee waiver on the basis of financial need, please email a completed fee-waiver application to Acceptd before you submit your application. Upon approval, we will provide you with a promo code to be entered during the payment step of your application on Acceptd. Fee waiver requests must be received no later than March 14, 2021.


 

HOW TO APPLY

STEP 1: CREATE YOUR PROFILE
Beginning Tuesday, February 16, 2021, the audition portal will open to create your profile in Acceptd, an online application tool. Please be prepared to submit the following materials:


1.  Full body photo (Ballet applicant, please submit photo in first arabesque)


2.  Headshot


3.  Résumé/CV


4.  Pay the $20.00 non-refundable application fee (per audition) or get it waived. Learn more about fee waivers here.


 

STEP 2: SELECT YOUR LIVE AUDITION DATE/TIME AND UPLOAD VIDEO(S)
Beginning March 1, 2021, you will be able to select your audition date and time. When selecting your audition date/time, you are required to upload your video(s). Please be prepared to submit the following materials:

-maximum of 7 minutes of Barre, Center work (pre-recorded video)

-maximum of 3 minutes of Solo Ballet Variation or Performance excerpt (pre-recorded video)

STEP 3: LEARN THE COMBO FOR THE LIVE AUDITION
After registering/selecting your date and time for the LIVE Zoom Audition, applicants will be emailed a link to download the music and video combination that they will present for the Live Audition.

AUDITION APPAREL:

En Pointe (Women)

 

Ballet slippers (Men)

 

Women, hair must be out of your face

 

Appropriate form fitting rehearsal clothing should be worn.

Women: Leotard, flesh tone or pink tights, pointe shoes and ballet slippers.
              No dance skirts or warm-ups allowed.

           

Men: Fitted Shorts and/or Tights, T-Shirt (without words or pictures).

 

All dancers must wear a color that is in contrast to their background.

 

Costumes are not allowed.

 


GUIDELINES FOR RECORDING YOUR AUDITION:

1.     Introduction: Before performing your selection, please include a spoken introduction in which you state your name, hometown, age, and number of years of dance training.

 

2.     Record your audition in a clearly defined interior space with neutral lighting and background that is free of creases and breaks.

 

3.     Shoot straight on, leaving the camera in one position. The camera should be placed sufficiently close to the performer so that positioning and movement of all parts of the body and face are clear and visible.

 

4.     Record in one take with no editing and with the camera framing your entire body to capture movement in place as well as movement in and through space. Make sure to select the best of several takes for submission.

 

5.     Ensure recording captures good quality sound and image.

 

6.     Please refrain from doing any of the following:

a.     Do not edit within the Barre or Center Work.

b.     Do not use special effects, dissolves, fades or wipes.

c.     Do not submit pre-recorded live performances, such as recitals, concerts, or competitions.

 


MEDIA SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Save and name your files individually as “Resume” and “Barre-Center Work”.

 

Upload each audition selection as a separate video file in the correct space provided.

 

When uploading, be sure to upload to your computer first and verify that image is upright (not sideways) and plays smoothly.

 

Please refrain from doing any of the following:

 

Do not edit within the Barre-Center Work.

 

Do not use special effects, dissolves, fades or wipes.

 

Do not submit pre-recorded live performances, such as recitals, concerts, or competitions.

 


ADJUDICATORS ARE LOOKING FOR:

Technique – the skill to execute the demands of the choreography with proficiency and apparent ease.

 

Presentation – the presentation of one's self, physically.

 

Musicality and phrasing – the ability to physically express the rhythm, melody, nuance, and character of the music through the choreography.

 

Artistry – the creativity and sincerity of the performance, which arouses a response within the viewer.
