The IABD "Cutting Edge" Summer Dance Intensive is a three-week
(July 2 - 20, 2018) program focusing on cross-disciplinary dance training that is designed to reflect the needs of today’s professional dance world. The program provides a highly focused and extensive pre-professional experience for intermediate and advanced dancers ages 10-17.
Our goal is to provide the highest level of professional training to encourage each student’s fullest technical and artistic development. Emphasis will be placed on daily classes in Contemporary Technique and Ballet while offering exposure to a variety of dance forms to optimize strength, versatility and creativity. Additional weekly classes include Contemporary Repertory with master classes offered in Jazz, Hip Hop and Dance History. All classes and master classes will be taught by IABD Master Teachers and distinguished guest artists.
The Intensive will culminate in a performance presentation at the Dance Institute of Washington. All dancers will have the opportunity to perform repertory choreographed by either our distinguished Master Teachers or professional choreographers selected from our membership.
All classes will be held in the state of the arts studio of the Dance Institute of Washington, 3400 14thStreet, NW, Washington, DC 20010.
The IABD Cutting Edge Summer Dance Intensive runs from July 2-20, 2018.
*July 4th will be a holiday.
Days of operation will be Monday through Friday. The program will operate from 9:00am – 3:00pm. There will be supervision for participants starting at 8:30am. Evening supervision can be arranged for an additional fee.

All dancers are under the careful supervision of the IABD staff. Participants will be closely monitored at all times.
The Summer Intensive Manager will be Carol Foster.
The 2018 faculty will comprise an array of master teachers who are working or have worked as professionals on Broadway, in film, and in companies such as Alvin Ailey, Deeply Rooted, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Forces of Nature, and Camille A. Brown and Dancers.

Lunch will not be provided on site. Participants should bring their own bag lunches. *There will be no refrigerator nor microwave available. Participants 13-17’s may utilize the eateries in the neighborhood within walking distance but only if accompanied by a summer aide. No one will be allowed off site without supervision. Lunch will only be a half hour so bag lunches are advised and preferred.
There is no formal housing for participants coming from outside of the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia) area. A listing of possible residency suggestions can be provided by emailing in advance.
The Summer Intensive is open to qualified participants who reside within and outside of the District of Columbia.
Dancers must wear black leotards skin tone tights, always have additional tights, leotards on hand. Do have footwear appropriate for ballet, modern, and commercial dance forms.
Ballet slippers, jazz sneakers or sneakers, and jazz shoes will be considered appropriate for rehearsals and performance. Appropriate cover-ups are expected while in the hallways and in the studio, if it is cool.
All participants will need their own transportation to and from the program. IABD Dance Intensive will not provide transportation for activities but will advise and give notice within reasonable times if travel will occur for any off site field trips/activities. Participants should have metro cards with
2 - 4 fare trips on them.
Participants are to be picked up on time. Late fees will be applied at $2.50 per minute per child.
Please note: Permission to release for older participants traveling on their own must be signed by parent/guardian. For younger participants an authorized persons form for pick-up form must be completed.
Acceptance Levels – Who Should Attend
Participants should be pre-professional students.
Intermediate (minimum of 3-4 years of continuous dance instruction in ballet and modern).
Intermediate/Advanced, (minimum of 4-5 years of continuous dance instruction ballet and modern).
*Concentrated Study in Jazz, African, Contemporary, and Liturgical Dance are also helpful.
