Scholarships

The International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) Scholarships are awarded to those who demonstrate ability, artistry and passion. Scholarships are for summer intensive training and professional dance training, education, and/or study. Applications are currently closed. There are two scholarships that are available to members, Joan Myers Brown Artist Development Fund and the Dr. Sherrill Berryman Johnson Dance Scholarship Fund.

Joan Myers Brown Artist Development Fund

Amount: $1,000

Eligibility Requirements

  • Scholarship recipients must be current members of the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD)
  • Individuals and Organizations must demonstrate at least 2 years of professional experience.
  • The Fund supports most direct costs related to the conception, creation and premiere of a new work. These include but are not limited to commissioning fees and artists' salaries, research costs, rehearsal and workshop expenses, promotion, and audience outreach and production costs up to and including the premiere run of the work.
  • The Fund encourages artists to experience world class educational opportunities locally and overseas, enhancing and strengthening their professional dance training, education, and/or study. In addition, the Fund will allow recipients to also attend workshops, seminars and special dance art events.
  • The Fund supports projects with a live performance, educational and artistic training.
  • The touring or documentation of work that has already premiered is not eligible for funding.
  • The fund will not cover costs for festivals and contests.

Dr. Sherrill Berryman Johnson Dance Scholarship Fund

Amount: $500

Eligibility Requirements

  • Scholarship recipients must be current members of the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD)
  • The Fund will allow recipients to attend all two and four-year colleges, universities, and dance schools. In addition, the Fund will allow recipients to also attend workshops, seminars and special dance arts events.
  • Scholarships are only available to individuals between the age of 14 - 22.
  • Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and not financial need. We want to know about your dreams. We want to know how the program or training that will benefit you the dancer, the art of dance and the world at large.
  • All types of dance training is eligible: Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Lyrical, Hip Hop, African, (we can't name them all - you get the idea).

Adjudicators consist of donors and professionals with no affiliation to participating applicants. Candidates are selected by a committee on an objective and non-discriminatory basis and consistent with the purpose of the Fund. Criteria such as age, religion, race, ethnic group or gender are not used in our selection process.
