Camille A. Brown & Dancers

Kennedy Center Debut (Washington, DC)

Friday, December 1, 2017 - BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play

Saturday, December 2, 2017 - ink (World Premiere)

Camille A Brown & DancersProlific and highly acclaimed choreographer Camille A. Brown makes her Kennedy Center debut with two full-evening works performed on separate nights: BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play and ink. Both performed to original live music, these two fascinating productions celebrate diversity, community, history, and finding oneself through daring dance.

BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play reveals the complexity of carving out an identity as a black female in urban American culture. Brown uses the rhythms of African American dance vernacular including social dancing, double dutch, steppin', tap, Juba, ring shout, and gesture to evoke childhood memories of self-discovery--everything from play to protest.

ink delves into the history of African American gestural language from the pedestrian to the profound, coded and now encoded language that
carries the essence of African Diasporic mythologies, folklore, tall tales, and rituals.
