The International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD), the service organization for dancers of color, announces three performance danceLWDT presentations, at the heart of the conference and festival, volunteer and vendor opportunities, and a call for proposals - opportunities for artists, educators, and scholars to share their research work with conference attendees in Los Angeles, CA. 

Selected participants for performance presentations and panels will be notified no later than November 2017.

This application is for a dance performance opportunity at the 30th Annual International Conference and Festival of Blacks in Dance in Los Angeles. Please submit an application for performance opportunities at the Marsee Auditorium and Sheraton Hotel. Dance artists and companies as well as ensembles affiliated with studios, high schools, colleges, universities, or conservatories are encouraged to apply. IABD Members must hold two years membership, for performance opportunities at the Marsee Auditorium and Gospel Brunch. Late night showcase opportunities are open to all. You cannot go back into the form after you complete the application process and have paid.

The Annual International Conference and Festival of Blacks in Dance is seeking qualified dance instructors who are interested in teaching at the Los Angeles, CA conference in January 2018. Please include your Resume/CV, a head shot and a brief narrative/ bio describing your years of experience. All instructors must have at least 3 – 5 years of teaching experience. You cannot go back into the form after you complete the application process.

VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

The 30th Annual International Conference and Festival of Blacks in Dance takes place with the support of hundreds of volunteers who contribute their time to help make our events successful. Volunteers assist with many aspects of the conference and festival, from helping behind the scenes to serving as a liaison to our international and VIP guests.

We are currently seeking volunteers who love Dance, or who simply enjoy lending a hand, for our 2018 events in Los Angeles! Volunteer shifts are available between the dates of January 22 - 28, 2018. Reliable and dedicated individuals who are interested in gaining valuable hands-on experience, knowledge and insight into the arts community, and willing to give of their time and expertise are welcome!

Volunteer’s tasks include but are not limited to: registration, ticket takers, ushers, production and guest liaisons. Sign up to volunteer!

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR PERFORMANCES, PROPOSALS, VENDOR AND VOLUNTEER APPLICATIONS:

Call for PERFORMERS APPLICATION

Time Limit ~ Performances are limited to:

  • Youth Groups: 5-7 minutes (includes setup & strike time)
  • IABD Members Companies: 10 minutes (includes setup & strike time)
  • IABD Founders and Guest Companies: 15 minutes (includes setup & strike time)

Requirements for Marsee Auditorium and Gospel Brunch Performances:

  • IABD membership for 2 years
    • MUST BE A CURRENT MEMBER OF THE IABD*
    • MUST HAVE AT LEAST 3 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL PERFORMING EXPERIENCE
      * In order to perform all Companies, Dance Studios, Individual Artists and Institutions must be CURRENT AND PAID, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 IABD members.
  • Production Fee: $150 paid to Lula Washington Dance Theatre
  • Photo, Bio, and Resume of the Artistic Director (or equivalent) to be sent in with the application

Late Night Showcases:

  • Open to High School, College, Emerging, and Established Choreographers/Companies
  • No IABD Membership required
  • Shows are from 11:00 PM - 12:30 AM

IABD/LWDT reserves the right to accept applications based on appropriateness to the event, IABD/LWDT’s image, and its audience. Only submit completed work.

Artists/Companies will be notified by The Lula Washington Dance Theatre of their performance acceptance by November 20, 2017. Pending acceptance, all program notes are due to Lula Washington Dance Theatre by November 10, 2017 – NO EXCEPTIONS. Failure to submit material may result in omission from performance program and/or performance cancellation.

IABD and Lula Washington Dance Theatre make every effort to provide a safe performance venue.  However, IABD and Lula Washington Dance Theatre will assume no responsibility for injury during Performances as well as acts of nature. You are responsible for providing your own special effects (fog machines, hazers, etc.).

Please include the following in your performance application submission:
1.    *Please make sure you meet the performance requirements. Give detail dates of membership (include membership number, if applicable) and performance experience. If you are not currently an IABD member, but you have attended the conference in the past and plan to join this year, please contact IABD for membership before submitting your performance application.
2.    Complete contact information (name, title, mailing/email address, and telephone number)
3.    Resume/CV and bio with individual name or group name
4.    A brief description of the proposed work including:

a.        Program information including title, choreographer, music, costumer,  lighting, names of dancers
b.        Time Length: (5-7 minutes for Youth Groups, 10 minutes for Member Companies, 15 minutes for Founder Companies (includes set up and strike time))
c.        Music (please be advised that you will need to get the required permission)
d.        Any special technical requirements

5.    Please include a payment to Lula Washington Dance Theatre in the amount of $150 in US Dollars (Performance Fee) for Marsee Auditorium and Gospel Brunch submissions (money order or certified check only). DO NOT SEND CASH BY MAIL!
6.    DVD of work to be presented or upload your choreography onto YOUTUBE. Submit your choreography via YOUTUBE. Click here to view instructions on how to upload to YOUTUBE.
7.    Submitted DVD can be picked up at the Guest Services Table during the Conference.

If selected, companies, groups and solo artists are responsible for submitting their production fee to Lula Washington Dance Theatre.  The Performance Fee is $150 US dollars per group for Marsee Auditorium and the Gospel Brunch.

VENDOR APPLICATION

Sheraton Hotel Vendors:

  • Each vendor will be given an 8’ X 8’ space, plus complimentary: one 6ft table, two chairs, one small waste basket
  • Vendors are responsible for their own parking:
    • Self-Parking $29/day at the Sheraton Hotel
    • Metered parking on the streets
    • Valet $42/day at the Sheraton
    • Hotel Airport parking options
    • Vendors are responsible for setting up and breaking down and/or securing their space each day
    • Registration at the hotel starts at 7:30am daily (Thursday – Sunday)

El Camino College - Marsee Auditorium Vendors:

  • Vendors are responsible for their own parking: $3
  • Vendors will be outside on the Plaza.
  • RENT: 6ft table, two chairs $30/day or $80 for three days, January 25, 26, 27 (Thursday – Saturday).
  • You may also provide your own canopy, tables and chairs
  • Vendors are responsible for setting up and breaking down and/or securing their space each day.
  • The Plaza and Lobby area of the theatre will start at 5:30pm each day. Performances begin at 7:30pm. The show ends approx. 9:30pm. Buses will go in rounds from 9:30pm – 10:30pm, vendors must strike and secure by 11pm.
  • El Camino College collects 20% commission of the profit, if you provide a seller and a cash box for your merchandise
  • Payment of sales tax on ARTIST and/or AGENT portion of merchandise item income is the responsibility of the ARTIST and/or AGENT. ARTIST and/or AGENT will provide to the DISTRICT a written itemized statement of merchandise items.
  • Please be prepared to settle the commission at the end of the night at each event.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • You will be responsible for your own transportation, parking, set-up and strike at each location.
  • Conference Buses CANNOT be used to transport any vending materials, even if the vendor is a registered conference attendee.
